Hi. If you dont know June is pride month. We celebrate pride month to recognize the impact LGBT people have had on the world. In June 1969 in New York City, a riot was held in support of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar that was raided by the police. Since then an annual demonstration of support has been done, what we now call the pride march.
I’m in South Africa and even though this march is traditionally an American protest, the whole world stands in solidarity to celebrate this month. You might ask why we celebrate pride month when we are not in America and the response is easy. It’s our pride too. It’s our fight too. It’s our responsibility too. It’s our love too.
I celebrate pride month to celebrate all the people before me who fought the battle for equality and visibility, all the people who are still fighting for my loved ones to marry who they want and live without fear. I celebrate pride month in honour of those who spread the message “love is love” and “equal rights for all.”
Pride month celebrates all the amazing queer love in the world, all the amazing queer people in the world. From your favourite popstars to your favourite blogger to your best friend, everyone who fights for love in their own way. All the amazing people who love love and spread love. We come together as a community to celebrate how far we have come, honor those who paved the path, acknowledge those who are still fighting and get strength from each other for the fight still ahead.
It must be hard for some people to celebrate pride month because maybe they feel they have nothing to be proud about. Some countries have the death penalty for queer people, some still don’t recognize gay marriage as legal and some just have absurd, hurtful/hateful amounts of homophobia. That’s the great thing about being part of a society, a win for one is a win for all. We can all be proud for the littlest moments in our lives and our fellow gays and lesbians’ lives.
The world is going through so much right now and what we need more of is love. Love for one another, love for all races, all sexualities, all religions, all people. There are bigger problems in the world than girls liking girls and boys kissing boys. We celebrate pride month, for love, for acceptance, for equality and for freedom. So be proud for choosing to love and spreading love and fighting for love.
Happy Pride Month to all the LGBTQ ++ community and its allies. May love conquer and live on. 💛🌈
